ST. CLAIRSVILLE Keep Belmont County Beautiful has been making great strides in its efforts to promote recycling and litter prevention, and everyone in the community can do their part. While doing so, environmentally conscious citizens may just get caught "green handed."
From January through November 2008, Keep Belmont County Beautiful, a division of the Jefferson-Belmont Regional Solid Waste Authority, collected 378,785 pounds (189.4 tons) of mixed paper and 243,829 pounds (121.9) tons of commingled glass, cans and plastic from the 16 recycling drop-off barns located throughout Belmont County. Those figures were released recently by Tammy Shepherd, director of KBCB.
She said another 677,327 pounds (394.5 tons) of mixed paper has been collected by KBCB from 27 local schools and 61 county agencies and businesses.
Because of the rapid growth in recycling, the Solid Waste Authority Board has approved the purchase of two trailers to attach to the recycling trucks to increase the amount of materials the recycling trucks can carry per load.
"We hope to have these trailers by January," Shepherd said.
In a way to thank residents for their commitment to recycling, the Solid Waste Authority employees are handing out "You were just caught green handed" post cards. If you are "caught green handed," just fill out the card you receive with your name, address and recycling drop-off site location and return to the card to the Solid Waste Authority. In return for getting caught "green handed," you will receive in the mail a Wal-Mart/Sam's Club gift card.
Both divisions of the Jefferson-Belmont Regional Solid Waste Authority - Keep Belmont County Beautiful and Keep Jefferson County Beautiful - have met the Good Standing requirement with Keep America Beautiful. Each program will receive the 2008 President's Circle Award this month, according to Kerry Crossen, director of the Keep Ohio Beautiful affiliate.
Keep Ohio Beautiful has announced that nine Ohio affiliates will receive donations from Troy-Bilt. Each of the affiliates will receive a 4-cycle backpack blower and a 4-cycle string trimmer. The equipment will be used for community clean-up and beatification projects in the respective county.
Among the Ohio affiliates are Keep Belmont County Beautiful, Keep Jefferson County Beautiful, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, Keep Columbus Beautiful, Defiance County Environment and Administrative Services, Elyria-Hancock County Solid Waste Environmental Series, Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful, and Keep Perrysburg Beautiful.
