RESIDENTS of Wheeling Township are reminded that Saturday is their Community Clean-Up Day. It is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 2 p.m. They can bring all their trash to the township garage on Ohio 9, Fairpoint.

Clean up Days are funded by the Jefferson/Belmont Regional Solid Waste Authority, and are being held with the cooperation of the Belmont County Recycling & Litter Prevention Program and the Township Trustees.

Samantha Carroll, director of the Belmont County RLP, said that in 2005, Community clean ups were held in nine locations and 25 rolls of containers were filled for a total of 211,220 pounds of debris collected. Also collected were 8,830 tires. Total cost for the clean ups came to $23,335. Carroll presented the figures to the Belmont County commissioners at a recent meeting.

Carroll said the clean up days continues to be a popular service with the citizens and the township trustees. She said most trustees are seeing a decrease in illegal dumping. Adopt-A-Roadway sites are up to 11 and collected in 2005 was 11,640 pounds of debris. River Sweep, Park Clean Up and Roadway Miles cleaned by the regular C-Cap crew totaled an additional 15,620 pounds.

Carroll told commissioners that a total of 133.27 tons of materials were collected for recycling in 2005.This includes metal cans, glass, plastic and paper from 11 drop off barns and the paper collected from 19 schools and 12 businesses and government offices serviced by the program.

According to Carroll, the program now has a website, www.bcrlp.com. Information about the program, litter, recycling opportunities, community outreach and a monthly calendar can be found on the site.

Carroll said the program's website directly links to the GIS site to locate recycling barns. GIS donated computers to the program's Environmental Education Room. Instruction for locating the barns on the County GIS site was also included in the Teacher Workshop.
