New recycling opportunities created at W-P

STEUBENVILLE - Two local agencies and an Ohio Valley steelmaker
are joining forces to give local residents more access
for recycling opportunities.
Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. is cooperating with Jefferson
County Recycling and Litter Prevention and the Belmont-Jefferson
Regional Solid Waste Authority's recycling efforts by establishing
a recycling center at the steelmaker's South Third Street
parking lot. The drop site is one more opportunity for
local residents to recycle materials and cut down on solid
waste in the area, according to Diane Julio, recycling
and litter prevention agency director.
"Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. has always been a supporter of local
recycling efforts," said Julio, adding additional recycling efforts between
the steelmaker and the agency is in the works. "This is just one of the
projects we'll be working on. We're just glad to be associated with them."
Pat Lanaghan, director of the solid waste authority, said
establishment of the recycling center at the parking lot
is part of the authority's effort to reduce solid waste
deposited in landfills by recycling items.
"The solid waste authority is ultimately responsible
for waste reduction," Lanaghan said, adding Wheeling-Pittsburgh
Steel is assisting those efforts to reduce waste.
The ultimate goal of the agency is to give local residents
90 percent accessibility for recycling opportunities to
reduce solid waste, a requirement mandated by the Ohio
Environmental Protection Agency, according to a joint press
release.
The new recycling center will allow residents and businesses
to recycle plastics, glass and paper products.
"The (recycled) materials can be co-mingled," said
Julio, adding paper products should be segregated, while
other materials can be mixed and deposited in the bins.
The bin will be accessible during most hours, she added.
According to the release, Jefferson County Commissioner
Dave Maple said he welcomes the joint effort to provide
additional recycling efforts for county residents.
"I'm thankful that our county has companies like
Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel that are good community members
and leaders actively trying to improve the quality of life
in our area through local support and company initiatives,
looking out for future generations with employment and
the commitment they have made through their efforts in
investing in new technologies," said Maple.
Steubenville Mayor Domenick Mucci said establishment of
the recycling center is part of "the overall picture
of what role recycling and litter prevention plays in our
economic development and in making our area a more beautiful,
cleaner place to live, visit and work along with enticing
new businesses and residents to Jefferson County."
